A cornerback cannot justifiably demand a record-breaking contract unless he is fully confident in his abilities. Self-belief fuels Christian Gonzalez on the field, at the negotiation table and even when the NFL schedule drops. The New England Patriots game-breaker reveled in the opportunity to excel versus Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf, and he had been doing so since May.

Following Sunday's 20-3 home win versus the Black and Gold, Gonzalez was asked when he first learned that he would be shadowing the 6-foot-4, 235-pounder. The 2024 Second-Team All-Pro and 2025 Pro Bowl selection offered a response that nicely punctuated his impressive performance in Foxborough.

“As soon as I (saw) the schedule,” he said, per the Boston Herald's Andrew Callahan. All that mental and physical preparation definitely paid off.

Gonzalez foiled Metcalf for much of the afternoon, stifling a Steelers' aerial attack that was already missing Michael Pittman Jr. He forced the 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers to work even harder in the pocket, and allowed the Patriots to survive their own scuffles in the passing game. If fans had conflicted feelings before, they will probably have no qualms about the $135 million contract that New England's star corner signed before the new season. The same cannot be said about the man he was covering on Sunday.

Metcalf, who inked a four-year, $132 million deal in 2025, continues to draw ire for his inconsistent play. The former Second-Team All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler suffered multiple self-inflicted wounds versus the Pats — committed two drops — but he was also no match for Gonzalez. His size and strength were completely neutralized, and the end result was an alarmingly inefficient outing.

DK Metcalf finished the game with four receptions on nine targets for 27 yards. Christian Gonzalez posted two passes defended and helped anchor a superb defensive game plan that put the defending AFC champions in the win column. There are a few formidable Jacksonville Jaguars receivers he can potentially battle in Week 3, but regardless of the assignment, it is clear this man will be ready for action.
