Mason Miller struggled in the ninth inning of Sunday’s Game 2, walking three batters before Jackson Chourio delivered a two-run single that gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 4-3 victory. The loss put the San Diego Padres in a 2-0 hole in the National League Division Series with their season on the line in Game 3.

Miller’s blown save against the Brewers sparked plenty of speculation online, but the Padres manager Craig Stammen is not concerned about the internet theory that the closer was tipping his pitches.

Screenshots circulating online appeared to show a difference in how Miller positioned his pitching hand inside his glove depending on whether he was throwing a fastball or slider. Video also showed Sal Frelick touching his neck while standing on second base before Miller threw a 1-2 slider to Chourio.

Stammen, however, said San Diego has people specifically responsible for identifying and addressing potential pitch-tipping issues.

“We’ve got a crew of people that are dedicated to that every single day,” Stammen said. “That is their sole job. We’re well aware of what’s going on with our pitchers, well aware of what’s going on with the Brewers pitchers and how they do things. It’s part of our daily acumen.”

Stammen also added that online speculation can make situations seem bigger than they are.

“The internet can go crazy and take things farther than they need to go,” he said. “We feel good about our process within that situation.”

Miller threw 40 pitches, with 19 missing the strike zone. He allowed four runs and walked three batters in 1 2/3 innings. He had only three blown saves during the regular season while posting a 1.67 ERA and leading the National League with 38 saves.

Game 3 is Tuesday at Petco Park, with San Diego needing a victory to keep its season alive.
