Christian Watson and Matthew Golden have emerged into the conversation of the best receiver duo in the NFL. The Green Bay Packers’ pass-catching combination has been red hot. Watson has 26 receptions for 474 yards and six touchdowns through five weeks, which is on pace for about 1,600 yards. Golden’s 24 catches for 397 yards and two touchdowns have him on track to hit about 1,350 yards.
The Packers have found a lot of success with star receivers during the 21st century. They’ve had Davante Adams, Donald Driver, and Greg Jennings, among others. The last time that they had two receivers both surpass the 1,000-yard mark, though, was when Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb did so in 2014.
The Packers’ offense has looked explosive, and they are coming off a 31-7 victory over the divisional rival Chicago Bears. The team still needs to prove themselves, though, and head coach Matt LaFleur knows as much.
“Well, we’ll see,” LaFleur said. “You’re only as good as your last game. They were pretty good this week.”
Watson is a big-bodied receiver who showed tons of potential early on in his career, but injuries slowed him down. Golden was a first-round pick last year, and while his rookie year was underwhelming, the potential was always there. Golden has great speed and route running.
The Packers haven’t instilled as much of a receiver-by-committee system this year as they have in recent years, which has allowed Jordan Love to target his best players. Of course, he also has tight end Tucker Kraft to target downfield. The Packers are now 3-2. They play in a stacked NFC North that also has the Bears, Detroit Lions, and a 5-0 Minnesota Vikings team. To stick with, or even surpass, the rest of the pack, the Green Bay passing game will need to remain elite.
