Rumors have swirled early in the MLB offseason that have suggested the Baltimore Orioles will consider trading anyone on the roster aside from first baseman Pete Alonso. While the O's would benefit from some changes following their mediocre 2026 season, will they be open to moving star infielder Gunnar Henderson despite his multiple years of team control remaining on his contract? Jake Rill of MLB.com recently addressed the idea of a Henderson trade.
“It seems highly unlikely the Orioles would trade Henderson,” Rill wrote in a recent article. “… It would take a huge offer to pry him away from Baltimore.”
Henderson had some good moments this past season, but he did not perform up to his expectations. The 2024 All-Star hit just .225 to go along with a .712 OPS in 2026. He added 24 home runs and 10 stolen bases.
Even if the Orioles were open to trading him, one would imagine they would wait another year or two in hopes that Henderson finds his All-Star form once again. Say he has a massive year in 2027 and a contract extension proves to be unrealistic. Trading him next offseason in that scenario would lead to more trade return value in a deal.
Article Continues BelowOf course, it remains to be seen if Baltimore is even open to the idea of moving him at all within the next couple of years. As Rill mentioned, the O's would need to receive a “huge offer” to even consider the idea of trading him soon.
Barring unforeseen circumstances, it seems likely that Gunnar Henderson will once again be in the Orioles lineup to begin the 2027 campaign.
