On Sunday afternoon, the Tennessee Titans started out their season with an ugly home loss to the New York Jets. It wasn't a good game for quarterback Cam Ward, who is hoping to take a step forward in his second season after being drafted number one overall but didn't get off to a great start.
Recently, Titans head coach Robert Saleh spoke on Ward's struggles and what he attributes them to.
âÂÂSaleh said Cam Ward and a lot of Titans young players fall back into old habits in the heat of battle. He said that only time on task is the way to help change some of the muscle memory and get young players to be able to apply what is practiced and take it to the game,â reported Terry McCormick of TitansInsider.com on X, formerly Twitter.
Ward is not the first young player to revert to old habits that may have worked in college but fall apart at the NFL level against superior athletes. Chicago Bears quarterback and fellow former number one overall draft pick Caleb Williams had a similar struggle throughout his first year in the NFL before starting to put things together in Year 2 and now looking like a potential star.
âÂÂHe's going to get better. He had a rough game⦠but it's not all on him⦠his teammates have got to be better for him, and obviously he's got to be better for his teammates with regards to delivering the football,â said Saleh, per Turron Davenport of ESPN on X, formerly Twitter.
Saleh didn't delve heavily into specifics regarding what was and wasn't on Ward in this one, but the Titans would like to see a much better performance from him on Sunday vs the Philadelphia Eagles.
