Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid needed just 50 seconds to steal the spotlight with another stunning finish in Sunday night's 4-1 win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The victory extended Edmonton's winning streak to three games and kept its perfect road record intact at 7-0-0.
McDavid opened the scoring with an impressive individual effort on his first shift. After receiving a short pass from Evan Bouchard in the neutral zone, the Oilers captain bounced the puck off the boards to himself before accelerating into the offensive zone. He then raced past Rangers defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov, cut toward the net and lifted the puck over rookie goaltender Dylan Garand.

The goal was McDavid's ninth of the season and his eighth career opening-minute strike, moving him past Mark Messier for the most in franchise history. It was also the 418th goal of his NHL career, putting him ahead of Glenn Anderson for sole possession of fourth place on Edmonton's all-time scoring list.
McDavid also provided an assist on Bouchard's second-period power-play goal, stretching his season-opening assist streak to 15 games. He also reached 30 assists faster than anyone in the history of the league, surpassing Wayne Gretzky's previous record of 16 games, set during the 1984-85 season.
The 29-year-old finished the contest with 39 points and extended his season-opening point streak to 15 games for the second time in his career. He previously recorded a 17-game run to begin the 2021-22 campaign.
Forward Colton Dach also played a major role in the win, scoring twice. His first goal arrived at 6:19 of the opening period to make it 2-0, while his empty-netter with 40 seconds remaining completed the scoring.
Bouchard contributed one goal and two assists, reaching 26 points through 15 games. That achievement places him among just four defensemen in NHL history to record at least 25 points over their first 15 games of a season, joining Bobby Orr, Al MacInnis and Denis Potvin.

The defeat was the Rangers' fourth consecutive loss and their sixth in seven games. They also continued a troubling pattern of conceding the opening goal in each of their four straight defeats.
The Oilers will attempt to continue their winning run when they visit the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.
