New Zealand will begin a five-match T20I series against India on October 22, 2026, with the first match scheduled at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The series spans four cities over 11 days and forms part of India's comprehensive 12-match tour that includes five ODIs and two Tests. The Black Caps finished as runners-up in the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, where they suffered a heavy defeat to India in the final at Ahmedabad. With 13 players from that squad retained for this series, Walter addressed the motivation surrounding the upcoming matches and how the team intends to channel that experience moving forward.
"I suppose it is there. No one likes to lose a final. I've done it twice, so I know all about it. But I think what comes first is representing the Black Caps and New Zealand well. So you've got a group of players who are always trying to do that first. Of course, if you manage to get a couple of victories at home, that would be great," Walter was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
The head coach highlighted the significance of the squad reuniting as a collective unit following the World Cup campaign. He noted that this would be the first time since that tournament that the majority of the squad would run out together, and he stressed the importance of managing immediate steps rather than focusing solely on distant goals.
"But taking care of the little steps in between now and then is the most important part. Being excited about representing again, it's been a while for some of the guys. Obviously it's the first time as a collective since the World Cup, with the majority of the squad that was in the World Cup to run out together," Walter added.
Walter clarified that while the World Cup result remains relevant, it is not the team's primary focal point in their discussions and planning. He stressed that the emphasis lies on playing quality cricket and representing New Zealand well during the series.
Playing quality cricket remains the primary focus
The squad for the series includes 13 players retained from the group that finished runner-up in the 2026 T20 World Cup. However, Rachin Ravindra has been ruled out after dislocating his right shoulder during a promotional shoot. Mitchell Santner will captain the side, while Michael Bracewell and Adam Milne return to the squad after missing the T20 World Cup through injury.
