The Indianapolis Colts are widely expected to be big sellers ahead of the trade deadline. Aside from Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, defensive lineman DeForest Buckner is the big name who has garnered interest around the league.

Buckner has been strongly linked to a move back to his old team, the San Francisco 49ers, and ESPN NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter have confirmed that there is potential interest from the team to make that reunion a reality.

As the two noted, Buckner starred for San Francisco from 2016 to 2019. He was part of the team that went on to lose to the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2019 season.

That proved to be Buckner's last game for the Niners, who traded him to the Colts in March 2020. Buckner has an expiring contract and the Colts are unlikely to re-sign him, so he is highly likely to get moved.

Buckner has previously mentioned that his main priority is to win and compete for a Super Bowl, and a move back to San Francisco would satisfy that goal. The Niners are looking like Super Bowl contenders once again after a perfect 6-0 start to the season.

Meanwhile, the Niners are known for dealing with a host of injury concerns, so adding more depth to a key position like defensive line ahead of another potentially long playoff run would be wise.

At age 32, Buckner is still playing at a fairly high level. He already has four sacks through six games for the Colts, which matches his sack total from last season in four fewer games.
