The NFL has essentially confirmed that former Titans defensive tackle Jordan Elliott went to his car to get a gun last week, after an altercation at practice. Beyond prompting the Titans to cut Elliott, the league is investigating the situation.
In response to this question posed to an NFL spokesperson via email on Wednesday morning — “Is he facing league scrutiny given the report that he went to retrieve a gun from car?” — the league said, “Yes. The club promptly notified the league of the matter which is under review.”
A source with a team other than the Titans called the incident an “egregious conduct violation to have a gun at an NFL facility,” and that the rule is (or at least is required to be) posted in every team facility, in multiple locations.
“You aren’t allowed to have one in your car if your car is parked inside an NFL facility,” the source said. “So I think it’s fairly certain that Ellliott will be suspended if and when he signs with a team.”
Fortunately, an inherently dangerous situation did not result in a tragedy. The message to all other players is clear. If you have a gun, always leave it at home before you drive to work.
