Mikel Brown Jr. has had a bit of a challenging start to his NBA career. The Brooklyn Nets are handling the sixth overall pick of the 2026 NBA Draft with kid gloves due to ankle troubles, and as a result, Brown is coming off the bench and with minutes restrictions to boot. But on Tuesday night against the Boston Celtics., it looked as though he was finally showing why the Nets were so high on him to begin with.

Brown was the hero for the Nets in regulation, as he hit the game-tying triple that sent the game to overtime. He would even make another three in OT to extend Brooklyn's lead to five. But he wouldn't reach those highs again in the game. In fact, he went from hero to zero in a hurry.

In the Nets' penultimate offensive possession, Brown smoked a layup that would have given them a three-point lead. The officials would then call a loose ball foul on Day'Ron Sharpe.

Luckily for Brown, the Nets would challenge this call and the officials would overturn this foul call, giving the ball back to Brooklyn with a chance to ice the game on the foul line. But Brown, instead of just holding on to the ball and waiting to get fouled, chose to lay the ball up right over Paul George and missed another gimme at the basket. This time, the Celtics secured the defensive rebound and called timeout.

We all know what happened next — Jayson Tatum took Brown to the cleaners on the other end and drilled a game-winning midrange shot right over the rookie.

This is the Nets guard's welcome to the NBA moment. It is clear from what he showed earlier in the game that he has the talent to carve out a long career in the league, but these are the mistakes he needs to cut from his game if he were to be a star in this association.

Brown, in 28 minutes of play, put up 17 points, five rebounds, and five assists in his best statistical game as a pro yet.
