The Detroit Pistons have gotten off to a strong start to the 2026 NBA season, currently sitting at 5-1 after a recent road win over the Brooklyn Nets. Still, questions abound at the Pistons' apparent lack of shooting and secondary playmaking around Cade Cunningham, which ultimately did them in last year's playoffs vs the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Now, more information has come to light about a potential high-profile trade target whom the Pistons could go after this year.

“Detroit is another team that will be salivating over getting Kyrie Irving… The Mavericks have a chance to get some real assets back in return for a player that's been good for them,” reported NBA insider Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, via Fullcourtpass on X, formerly Twitter.

It's not hard to see why the Pistons would be interested in a player like Irving, who appears to have not lost a step on the heels of his ACL injury recovery this year with the Mavericks, recently helping them close out a big win over the Houston Rockets at home.

Meanwhile, it's certainly possible that the Pistons would have gone home in round one last year had the Orlando Magic not gotten some tough injury luck, with the lack of secondary shot creation around Cunningham being the major reason why. Irving would certainly provide that in spades, and while Detroit might have a relatively small backcourt if such a move were made, the payoff could be well worth the risk, depending on Dallas' asking price.

In the meantime, the Pistons will next hit the floor on Monday evening on the road vs the Charlotte Hornets.
