With the Miami Heat opening the 2026-27 season with four consecutive losses, former NBA player Matt Barnes has floated the possibility of a blockbuster trade involving Giannis Antetokounmpo and New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns.

Miami's struggles continued Monday night with a 113-109 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, raising early questions about the Heat's new era with Antetokounmpo following his offseason arrival from the Milwaukee Bucks.

Speaking on the latest episode of “All The Smoke,” Barnes questioned whether Miami could eventually consider significant roster changes if its disappointing start continues.

“I’d be interested to see if this plan doesn’t go as they thought it would, does he (Giannis) leave? Or do they trade Bam [Adebayo] and keep him?”

Barnes also discussed the possibility of moving Adebayo to address Miami's roster needs, particularly its lack of younger contributors on the wing.

“You’d get some stuff for Bam. I don’t think you need a ton to be honest with you. I think they need some youth on the wing. I like [Andrew] Wiggins, but obviously Klay [Thompson] is a little bit older, Tim Hardaway Jr.’s been in the league for a minute… But I think they can definitely get enough if they move Bam and we’re not insinuating they need to move Bam, we’re not saying trade Bam. It’s way too early to hit the panic button to your point but I would be interested to see what moves they make if it doesn’t pan out.”

Matt Barnes speaks about the possibility of the Heat trading Bam Adebayo if the Giannis pairing doesn’t workout, or Giannis joining the Knicks:

However, Barnes' most intriguing hypothetical involved the Knicks potentially revisiting their longstanding interest in Antetokounmpo.

“Are the Knicks praying it doesn’t go well in Miami and KAT didn’t get the extension and Giannis doesn’t sign the extension and they just swap those two center pieces?”

Barnes' proposal comes amid uncertainty surrounding Towns' long-term future in New York despite helping the Knicks capture their first NBA championship since 1973.

The Knicks and Towns have yet to reach an agreement on a contract extension, with ESPN's Shams Charania previously reporting that a deal entering the season appeared unlikely.

According to SNY's Ian Begley, the two sides discussed potential extensions beginning in the $45 million to $50 million range, although negotiations have not produced an agreement.

Towns also holds a $61 million player option for the 2027-28 season, creating additional financial complications for a franchise determined to avoid the NBA's second luxury tax apron.

Knicks owner James Dolan has expressed his unwillingness to enter the second apron, making Towns' contract negotiations particularly significant as New York attempts to preserve its championship core.

Meanwhile, Antetokounmpo's own extension situation could become another factor in Miami's long-term planning.

Both franchises have struggled early, with the Knicks opening their title defense 1-3 despite earning their first victory Tuesday night in a 111-97 win over the Detroit Pistons.

For now, Barnes' proposal remains hypothetical, with no indication that either organization has discussed an Antetokounmpo-Towns swap. However, the unresolved contract situations could keep both stars at the center of future trade speculation.
