NBA legend Paul Pierce did not need many words to respond to reports about his finances. He only needed one. The Boston Celtics legend took to X on Tuesday with a simple post that read, “Cap.”

The message, slang for a lie or exaggeration, quickly went viral as fans connected it to reports claiming the former NBA star is in financial trouble.

Pierce did not elaborate on what exactly he was referring to, and he did not specify which claims he disputes. Still, the timing left little doubt about what fans believed the post was about.

Earlier on Tuesday, TMZ published reports citing court filings in an ongoing support case between Pierce and his ex-girlfriend. In those documents, Pierce’s legal team described him as “drowning financially” and “tapped out,” arguing that he can no longer afford his court-ordered payments.

According to the filings, Pierce’s average monthly income was previously around $119,000 but has since dropped to zero in regular salary. He reportedly earned about $23,000 in September from partnership interests in other business ventures.

The documents also reportedly list roughly $48,000 in monthly personal expenses, on top of about $28,000 in child support and $20,000 in spousal support. Pierce reportedly declared around $300,000 in cash and $3 million in property.

Pierce’s attorney argued that the amounts he has been ordered to pay “no longer reflect [Pierce’s] actual income.”

A big part of the change stems from the end of his television career. Pierce last worked at Fox Sports on the daily show “Speak,” which was among several programs the network shut down in 2025. According to the filings, he received his final check in August.

The reports caught plenty of fans off guard, given what Pierce earned during his playing career. The 10-time All-Star made nearly $200 million in salary over 19 NBA seasons, most of them with the Celtics. He led Boston to the 2008 championship and was named Finals MVP.

It is worth noting that court filings do not necessarily paint a complete picture of a person’s overall wealth, and the court has yet to rule on the latest requests in the case.

For now, Pierce has let his one-word post do the talking, and it remains unclear whether he plans to address the situation further.
