Shai Gilgeous-Alexander didn't care about extending his historic 20-point streak following the Oklahoma City Thunder's 96-84 win over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night. This garnered firm praise from NBA insider Michael Wilbon.
In 35 minutes of action, Gilgeous-Alexander didn't have his best offensive night. He finished with 17 points, three assists, two rebounds, and one block. This marked the end of his 20-point streak of 141 games, a record in league history.
Wilbon reacted to the star guard's comments about the streak ending during his Friday appearance on ESPN's NBA Today. He praised Gilgeous-Alexander for not worrying about the feat itself, instead focusing on winning.
“I love what he said. ‘I always treat the game with respect.' Good for him. He just looked up and said, ‘enough.' Love it. ‘I don't need to do this anymore.' And he's got these feats. What's going to make a difference if he goes to 157? That's going to change his career? He's going to go into the Hall of Fame quicker? His jacket's going to be a different color?” Wilbon said.
Look, there's some guys who sort of do the wrong thing a lot, and their franchises are cringing in the morning when they wake up. SGA does the right thing 100% of the time by him, by his team, by his franchise, by the league, and the fact that this is over, I applaud him. He just said, ‘enough, dude. Come on. We got the other stuff.'”
