How the 2026 Division Series field is decided

Major League Baseball’s postseason includes 12 teams, six from each league.

The two highest-seeded division winners in each league receive first-round byes. The remaining four clubs in each league play best-of-three Wild Card Series, with the higher seed hosting every game.

The Division Series then reduces the field from eight teams to four. Each series uses a best-of-five format, with the winners progressing to the American League Championship Series and National League Championship Series.

Brewers take the National League’s top seed

Milwaukee enter the postseason as Major League Baseball’s No. 1 overall seed after completing a 103-59 regular season.

The Brewers reached 100 victories for the first time in franchise history before winning their final three games to finish 103-59. Their final record gave them home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Milwaukee now have several days to prepare while San Diego and Chicago contest their Wild Card Series.

The Padres enter as the National League’s No. 4 seed and host the No. 5 Cubs. The winner will move directly into a Division Series against a Brewers side that will have avoided the physical and tactical demands of the opening postseason round.

The rest allows Milwaukee to organise their pitching rotation and recover from the closing weeks of the regular season. It also creates a different challenge. Their opponent will arrive having already played postseason baseball under elimination pressure.

Neither factor guarantees an advantage once the series begins.

Dodgers continue pursuit of a third successive title

Los Angeles finished 100-62 and secured the National League’s No. 2 seed.

The Dodgers enter October as back-to-back World Series champions. They are attempting to become the first MLB club to win three consecutive championships since the New York Yankees completed a three-peat from 1998 to 2000.

Their Division Series opponent will be either Atlanta or Philadelphia.

The Braves secured the NL East and the No. 3 seed, while the Phillies claimed the final National League Wild Card spot on the last day of the regular season with a 7-3 victory over Tampa Bay.

That gives Los Angeles a clear route into the postseason without giving them a straightforward assignment.

Atlanta won the NL East at 94-68 and returned to the postseason after missing out in 2025.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, had to keep their season alive until the final day.

The Dodgers will have home-field advantage in their Division Series regardless of which club advances.

Rays wait for Yankees or Red Sox

Tampa Bay completed the regular season at 98-64 and earned the American League’s No. 1 seed.

Their opponent will come from one of baseball’s most familiar rivalries.

Fourth-seeded New York host fifth-seeded Boston in the Bronx, with the winner advancing to face the Rays.

The Yankees endured a season disrupted by injuries but still secured the leading AL Wild Card position. Boston recovered from a difficult start and used a strong second half to return to postseason contention.

Tampa Bay’s reward for winning the AL East is a direct passage into the Division Series. The Rays also avoid the risk of elimination in a short best-of-three round, where a single poor pitching performance can quickly change a series.

Their challenge will begin immediately against an opponent that has already survived a postseason series.

The route makes the Yankees-Red Sox Wild Card matchup especially important. Its winner will move from an intense divisional rivalry straight into another AL East contest against Tampa Bay.

Guardians complete a late rise to a first-round bye

Cleveland secured the American League’s No. 2 seed after winning the AL Central.

The Guardians’ position looked far less secure during the second half of the season. They were 61-66 after a loss on 19 August before producing a late surge that carried them past Chicago in the division race. MLB confirmed Cleveland as the second seed after they secured the Central.

That turnaround means the Guardians now avoid the Wild Card round completely.

Instead, Cleveland will host either Houston or the White Sox in the Division Series.

Houston claimed the AL West on the final day of the regular season and secured the No. 3 seed. The Astros host sixth-seeded Chicago in their best-of-three Wild Card Series.

A Cleveland-Chicago Division Series would create another meeting between AL Central opponents. Houston advancing would instead send the AL West champions to Cleveland.

Either route presents a different test for a Guardians team whose strongest baseball arrived at the right stage of the season.

Why the Wild Card Series still matters to the Division Series

The four bye teams know where they will play and which pair of opponents can reach them. They do not yet know which pitching staff, batting order or tactical matchup they will actually face.

That uncertainty matters because Wild Card clubs can approach a three-game series differently from a five-game Division Series.

A team may use its leading starting pitchers during the Wild Card round and enter the next series without its preferred rotation order. Bullpens can also face heavier workloads if games are close.

The bye teams avoid those immediate pressures, although several days without competitive action presents its own preparation challenge.

The Division Series format leaves little room for a slow start. A club needs only three victories to advance, making the first two games particularly significant for the teams holding home-field advantage.
