After a rough start to the football season, many in the HBCU football world questioned Mississippi Valley State's viability as an FCS program. Their losses to Nicholls, Sacramento State, and Delta State signaled a program in distress, and some went too far, insinuating they should drop down to Division II because of resource disparities.
Since then, the Delta Devils have won two straight games, including a resounding comeback win over SWAC champion Prairie View A&M Panthers last week. This week, they faced Prairie View's rival, Texas Southern University. Once again, Mississippi Valley State, led by head coach Charrell Buckley, had to fight back after falling behind by double digits.
After a back-and-forth start, Texas Southern kicked a field goal, courtesy of Miguel Arana III, to take a 24-14 lead. Late in the third quarter, Althean Renfro finished a seven-play, 38-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown. That put Texas Southern up 31-14, but in the fourth quarter, Mississippi Valley State put together a 24-point drive that ultimately powered them to a 38-34 victory.
Article Continues BelowJosh Brown once again had a standout game as a dual-threat quarterback. He threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions, and rushed for 100 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns, including a 54-yard run. On the other side, Cam'Ron McCoy threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions on 15 of 30 passes, but the Mississippi Valley State defensive line got to him effectively, and he finished the game with -25 yards.
Mississippi Valley State now looks to continue their winning momentum as they face off against SWAC East opponent Bethune-Cookman University, who recently lost 55-17 to Alabama A&M.
