The Notre Dame football team lost a close game to BYU on the road Saturday night. The ending was cloaked in controversy. One second appeared to remain on the clock at the end of the contest, but Notre Dame didn't get one last play.

Former official Mike Pereira blasted the officiating at the end of the game. He now works as a rules analyst for FOX.

“You have to review it,” Pereira told The Athletic on Saturday night. “That had to be reviewed immediately.”

Following the game, the Big 12 conference admitted that the officials made a mistake by not allowing Notre Dame one more play.

“Following the Big 12’s review of the final play of Saturday’s Notre Dame-BYU game, it was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew,” the Big 12 statement said. “The Conference will conduct a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process in advance of next week’s games.”

This is the second time this season a game was decided on a controversial play. Michigan defeated Western Michigan earlier this season after officials ruled one more play should be allowed in that contest. Michigan went on to score because of that play, and ultimately win.

At the end of the Notre Dame-BYU game on Saturday, Notre Dame attempted a pass on what was the final play. The game broadcast crew said there was possible defensive pass interference against BYU. No penalty was called.

Pereira was enraged that officials missed that one second was left.

“It is embarrassing for all officiating, quite frankly. Everybody gets brought into this, even the NFL and high school officiating because it is such a ridiculous miss that has nothing to do with judgment. Nothing. I understand missing pass interference. This, especially after what happened six weeks ago, it’s embarrassing. They get one more play,” Pereira said.

Notre Dame fans will likely debate for years whether one more play could have made a difference in this game.
