Miami (FL) football offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson gains back star running back Mark Fletcher versus Clemson. No doubt the OC wants to unleash fury onto the Hurricanes' Atlantic Coast Conference rival. But Dawson took a fierce shot at the SEC too.
The verbose coordinator took his dig at the rival conference Monday, with rankings becoming the subject matter in his interview with On3.
“Everything's SEC, SEC. They have all their teams in the top 25. Good for you,” Dawson began with his rant. “At the end of the year, half of them will be in the top 30. We can’t sit here and say, ‘hey, we play X number of top-25 teams’. We’ll count those chips up at the end of the year.”
He also ripped the idea of preseason rankings, believing it doesn't really exist. The top offensive assistant under head coach Mario Cristobal wasn't through with tearing into the SEC.
Article Continues Below“You shouldn’t have a ranking until October. How do you know? (Texas) A&M was ranked in the top-five, but how does that look right now?” Dawson asked. “If anything, it isn’t predictable for the future, it’s the past. Go look at the top-10 last year. I did. Five of them weren’t even in the (end of season) top-25.”
His Hurricanes certainly win that argument there. After all, Miami took down two SEC heavyweights in Texas A&M and Ole Miss during the College Football Playoffs.
Dawson has since unleashed quarterback Darian Mensah into record-setting numbers, while turning wide receiver Malachi Toney into a Heisman Trophy contender.
