There continues to be some discourse surrounding the reaction of New York Mets fans who were in attendance on Tuesday at Citi Field following Pete Alonso's game-tying home run in the ninth inning, which just so happened to be the 300th long ball of his career. The Mets were up 3-2 at the time, and they would eventually lose the game in extra innings, 7-5, making it odd for some players that their own fans would cheer on a player from the opposing team at such a crucial juncture of the contest.

Just to twist the knife even further, a video has been circulating on social media with Mets owner Steve Cohen being among those who were applauding Alonso for his historic home run. Cohen defended why he made such a gesture, saying that it felt right to celebrate that momentous occasion for a former star of the team.

“It was his 300th. I gotta give him props,” Cohen said, per Mike Puma of the New York Post.

If Alonso had hit that home run at another juncture of the game, perhaps there wouldn't be such an outcry from the Mets players regarding their fans' reaction. Sean Manaea was one of the most vocal players regarding this situation, saying that it was “crazy” to see the fans at Citi Field react the way they did and that this was unprecedented, at least during his time in the big leagues.

Nonetheless, Alonso hit the first 264 home runs of his career for the Mets. The fans never wanted to see him sign a five-year, $155 million contract with the Orioles, and they cheered him after he accomplished something huge.

With the team being out of playoff contention anyway, they know that a loss doesn't really matter much in the grand scheme of things this season. Mets fans simply made their feelings known, and it's up to Cohen now to try and put the team in a winning position after a dreadful 2026 season so that they can ease their fanbase's unrest.
