Dallas Mavericks rookie selection Morez Johnson Jr. already knows how to get a reaction out of his new head coach.
During the Dallas Mavericks' NBA Media Day at American Airlines Center, Johnson had some fun with Dusty May during a team photoshoot. In a 12-second clip shared by the Mavericks, May was posing with a basketball while Johnson gave him instructions from behind the camera.
Johnson encouraged May to show some attitude and repeatedly told him to hit a “mean mug” for the photo.
“I need a mean mug,” the rookie center said. “Let me see that mean mug.”
However, May had a hard time controlling his laughter as the camera kept clicking pictures and the rookie tried to coach his coach through the shoot.
The two already have plenty of history. May coached Johnson at Michigan last season, helping the Wolverines win the 2026 NCAA championship before leaving for Dallas in June.
The Mavericks then reunited the pair on draft night, selecting Johnson with the No. 9 overall pick. Johnson Jr. began his college career with the Illinois Fighting Illini before transferring to Michigan for his sophomore season.
Playing under May, Johnson started every game and became the Wolverines' defensive anchor. He averaged 13.1 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 62.3% from the field, earning him All-Big Ten and All-Defensive team honors.
His standout season ended with Michigan winning the 2026 NCAA championship. The 6-foot-9 forward brings strong rebounding, shot-blocking, and energy to the frontcourt. He also showed his potential during the NBA Summer League, scoring 27 points and grabbing eight rebounds against the Golden State Warriors.
Johnson could also have an important role for Dallas right away. The rookie is expected to compete for minutes in the frontcourt as the Mavericks manage Dereck Lively II's health and work through their rotation.
