It’s pretty clear to Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur that his team has a fortitude problem. His crazy decisions don’t help matters. And his seat should already be red hot after another brutal choke to start the 2026 season against the Vikings.

Leading 22-10 in the fourth quarter, the Packers somehow got blown out 39-22 by a Vikings team that lost its starting quarterback within a few plays of the game starting. Seriously, they had Carson Wentz at quarterback. Enough said.

Do the Packers need new sideline leadership?

NFL coaches do not keep their jobs just because they try hard or are willing to take risks. At the end of the day, the scoreboard gives them security, or it points to the exit sign.

The Packers have lost each of their last six games. And yet they’ve been ahead by two scores in four of those contests.

LaFleur, perhaps, needs to be less aggressive with a lead. At least if that’s his reasoning for the loss. He said the mindset of wanting to be aggressive stood behind the decision to take points off the board and go for it on fourth down, according to NBC Sports.

“I think that’s just we’re going to be aggressive,” LaFleur said in his postgame press conference. “It was going to be an eight-point game. If it would have been a two-possession game, I probably would have thought otherwise. But I thought we had a chance.

“We didn’t do very well in the red zone. Sometimes you live and die by that. But we’re gonna be aggressive. And we’re gonna try to go for the throat in that situation.”

LaFleur is falling into the trap that many coaches step into these days. It’s almost like they think three points isn’t manly. Or maybe three points don’t help the chance to win. But when you’re up by five in the fourth quarter, three points mean you can’t lose the lead on one possession.

Packers fans are growing restless, no doubt. And the tired “we’re disappointed” narrative has lost any soothing power. But that’s where LaFleur went, according to PackersWire.com.

“Obviously, very disappointed. We were in command of the game. The fourth quarter, the big momentum shift happened when we went for it on 4th-and-1 and didn't convert. They were able to capitalize. We didn't answer.

“Coaching, playing, it's all of us. We have to do a better job of putting our players in position, and when we are in position, we have to execute. Far too many penalties tonight.”

Is Matt LaFleur really in trouble?

In one sense, no. The Packers would absolutely have to collapse for the organization to move on from him during the season. But every game becomes important.

Here’s why: The difference between 10-7 and 7-10. That’s what could cost LaFleur his job.

One thing LaFleur knows is that the Packers’ organization is solid. Any young aspiring head coach would love to get a chance to take over this team. And veteran coaches would view it as a great second or third chance. In short, the Packers would have an incredible list of interested coaching candidates.

LaFleur has to focus on the task at hand. Notably, what went wrong with the defense in the fourth quarter? How did the team collapse against a backup quarterback, which made the Vikings’ offense suddenly questionable?

All LaFleur can do at this point is move forward and try to grow from a loss.

“It's get back to work,” LaFleur said. “Be critical of the tape. Stay together. And you have to have a great week of prep. We have to rebound.

“It's always hard to go on the road in this league. We have a great challenge in front of us, and we have to pick up the pieces.”

Maybe it’s good that the Packers will be a heavy favorite against the Jets. And maybe it’s good that the Jets’ Week 1 win should keep the Packers from overlooking the opponent.

Looking at the upcoming schedule, the Packers have three winnable games. They face the Jets on the road, the Falcons at home, and the Buccaneers on the road. And the Packers need to be 3-1 heading into their first meeting with the Bears. That’s because the Bears spoke volumes about their offensive capability in a 59-37 crushing of the Panthers in their opener.

Of course, they can’t think about the Bears yet. LaFleur has to reground his team. They basically need to restart the 2026 season. And do better.
