Maryland dropped to 2-5 on Saturday. They came into the game at home against Rutgers as a slight favorite, but Rutgers took a 37-30 victory on the road. It seems to be a foregone conclusion that Maryland coach Mike Locksley will be fired.

With Maryland on an open week this week, it seems like the right time to fire Locksley, but it may not happen, according to Pete Nakos of On3.

“While pressure continues to build around the Maryland football program for a decision on Mike Locksley, sources tell On3 it appears unlikely a move is made on Sunday leading into the Terrapins bye week,” Nakos wrote.

Maryland has been patient with Locksley, but they have now lost 13 straight to power-conference opponents. Maryland is also coming off back-to-back 4-8 seasons, and has just two Big Ten wins since the start of 2024. Overall, he is 39-54 as the head coach of Maryland. Locksley has never proven to be a successful head coach. He took over the head coaching job at New Mexico in 2009, leading them to a 1-11 record. They went 1-11 again in 2010 before being fired after a 0-4 start in 2011.

He then went to Maryland to join Randy Edsall's staff as the offensive coordinator. He would take over as the interim coach in 2015, going 1-5. Locksley then spent time at Alabama before returning to Maryland in 2019 as the head coach.

Maryland does not owe Locksley a lot of money. It would be less than a $10 million buyout, which is more than doable for the university. Still, they do not have someone who could be the interim, according to Nakos. Further, firing Locksley early could lead to transfer portal poaching and Maryland losing some key players.

Maryland will return to the field on Halloween against Illinois.
