Southern University suffered a debilitating loss to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff during their homecoming. The Golden Lions ultimately pulled off a 41-10 victory, marking their third loss in SWAC play and their first loss in the SWAC West Division.

Southern gave up 453 yards of total offense, including 299 rushing yards, but dominated time of possession. Despite an opening-drive touchdown and a 10-7 lead in the first quarter, the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff dominated the rest of the game, and Southern didn't score again.

In post-game comments obtained by Brendan Fairburn of LA First News, Marshall Faulk gave his rundown of why the team lost.

“No, I wasn't. It wasn't that. That wasn't our best effort at all. That wasn't even close to our best effort, and you guys have seen us play from behind, play with much better effort. That wasn't it. That wasn't it tonight. I see what you guys see, and I stand up here and I'm honest with you guys. I don't want to use the word, but I feel like we had some players, I can't say everybody, kind of quit. They tapped out a little bit, and that's what it looked like today on the field. We don't subscribe to that. Those people, they will not be here. They will not play here. We're not having that.”

The loss comes after Alonzo Hampton criticized Southern for scheduling the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff for homecoming on Monday's SWAC Coaches Call, saying they were scheduled because they were expected to be an easy win.

Faulk ultimately pushed back on the characterization and a quote obtained by Fairburn.

“I was on the Coaches Call yesterday,” Faulk said. “You know, Lonzo…'Oh my God, they can't believe they chose us for homecoming.' Look, man, if you need this to get up, get your team up, then so be it. We're up. I'm up every game. We're going to be up whether we're homecoming or not. I don't give a care.”
