The Universe Boss reveals how Mumbai Indians' pace spearhead's unorthodox action and slower ball forced him to abandon his aggressive approach.
Widely regarded as one of the most destructive T20 batters ever, Chris Gayle has identified Lasith Malinga as the most challenging bowler he encountered throughout his T20 career. The West Indian batter, who established himself as one of the format's most dominant hitters, faced the Sri Lankan pace spearhead multiple times across various T20 competitions, including the Indian Premier League.
Gayle's record against Malinga tells a story of struggle. The Universe Boss accumulated 57 runs off 72 balls in T20 matches against the Mumbai Indians bowler and was dismissed once during their head-to-head encounters in the format.
"At the time it was Malinga, with his action at the time, you know. I mean, he didn't get me out, but it was very difficult to face Malinga with that action. I just couldn't position myself in a particular way to hit him," Gayle said in an interview with Midwicket Stories.
Why Malinga posed the greatest challenge
Malinga's unorthodox bowling action presented a puzzle that even an attacking player like Gayle could not consistently solve. The Sri Lankan's distinctive style made it exceptionally difficult for batters to anticipate his deliveries and adjust their positioning accordingly.
"And his slower ball, there's no way I could have picked his slower ball as well, so deceiving. He was just so difficult for me as a T20 player," Gayle added.
How Gayle altered his approach
The challenge posed by Malinga's bowling forced Gayle to fundamentally alter his approach at the crease. Rather than pursuing his trademark aggressive batting, Gayle adopted a survival mindset when facing the Mumbai Indians bowler.
"So I was like, listen, I'm trying to survive, right? I just try to look to block him, unusual stuff for the Universe Boss, but I try to look to block or get off strike and then take on the other bowlers, just try and play it a bit smart, on the safer side of things if I cannot pick a bowler," Gayle said.
Malinga's IPL career demonstrated his effectiveness as a death bowler and match-winner. The pace spearhead took 170 wickets across 122 IPL games and claimed four titles with Mumbai Indians during his tenure in the league.
Gayle's own IPL legacy stands among the most prolific in the tournament's history. He accumulated 4,965 runs in the league and struck 357 sixes, the biggest tally in IPL history. Gayle also scored an unbeaten 175 off 66 balls against Pune Warriors in 2013 in Bengaluru, which remains the highest individual score in IPL history. He reached 100 in 30 balls during that innings, a record that has remained unmatched since.
