The Minnesota Lynx were shockingly bounced out of the playoffs in just two games despite entering the postseason with the best record in basketball. The New York Liberty stole Game 1 from Minnesota on the road before playing a complete game at home on Tuesday night, taking Game 2 87-71 and moving onto the second round.

The Lynx had the best team in the WNBA all season long, in large part thanks to a deep rotation led by rookie sensation Olivia Miles. Miles took the league by storm in her first season, even garnering MVP consideration throughout most of the season.

Unfortunately, Miles was completely ineffective in this series against a Liberty team that has strong defenders on the perimeter and a very deep guard room. After the series ended, head coach Cheryl Reeve spoke about Miles and forward Natasha Howard having a rough go of it in this series, via Owen Pence.

“Our two best players all season long were Olivia Miles and Natasha Howard,” Reeve said. “Unfortunately for us, Liv and Tasha were kind of rendered ineffective in these two games.”

Miles averaged nearly 20 points and six assists per game during the regular season, so it was a bit stunning to see her lack of production in this series. In two games, she scored just 16 points and had two assists on 4-of-20 shooting. She was benched in the second half of Game 2 by Reeve, who clearly decided that her offensive struggles and defensive limitations were too much to overcome.

Howard is a veteran who has had her strong moments in the postseason during her career, but this series was not one of them. After averaging almost 15 points per game to go with 7.6 rebounds in the regular season, Howard scored just 10 points and added seven rebounds in two games against New York.

The Liberty are now moving onto the semifinals, where they will take on either the Atlanta Dream or the Washington Mystics. On the other side, the Lynx will have to take a long, hard look in the mirror after yet another playoff heartbreak.
