LSU is headed to Oxford for a Week 3 showdown with Ole Miss on September 19, putting Lane Kiffin at the center of one of college football's biggest storylines. It will be Kiffin's first trip back to Ole Miss as LSU's head coach and his first return since leaving the Rebels last year.

Kiffin coached at Ole Miss for six seasons before departing last November with the Rebels sitting at 10-1 and in the middle of their College Football Playoff push. Now, he will face his former team at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in a game that will receive primetime treatment on ABC.

Tigers linebacker Whit Weeks, who is dating Kiffin's daughter Landry, said on Tuesday that he has not spent much time thinking about the reception awaiting his coach. However, Weeks expects Kiffin to be prepared because he has already experienced a hostile return to a former program.

Kiffin's return to Tennessee in 2021 became infamous after fans threw objects onto the field, including a golf ball and mustard bottle. Weeks believes that experience means his coach knows what could await him in Oxford.

“I haven’t really thought about that,” said Weeks. “But, I mean, I know he's going to get it. I know they don't like him up there. But he's prepared for that. I mean, it is what it is. He's done it before in his career. I know he's more prepared than anybody.”

The matchup also features two Top-10 teams. LSU is ranked No. 7 in the latest AP Poll, while Ole Miss is No. 8. This is the first time since 1962 both programs have been ranked inside the Top 10 simultaneously, with the teams reaching that level together only five times in poll history.

The Tigers defense enter the game ranked No. 2 nationally in ESPN SP+. Against Louisiana Tech, LSU allowed only 140 total yards and minus-3 rushing yards while producing seven sacks and three turnovers. Princewill Umanmielen recorded three sacks, while Weeks had six tackles and three defensive stops.

Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has already thrown for 561 yards and five touchdowns through two games. Meanwhile, Tigers quarterback Sam Leavitt is coming off a game in which he threw three interceptions.

Kiffin, whose team is a 2.5-point favorite, has also argued that the pressure is on Ole Miss, with last season's accomplishments and the production of Chambliss and Kewan Lacy raising expectations around the Rebels.
