There were shades of Jeffrey Maier flashbacks in the Bronx on Wednesday night, when a potential game-tying home run by Anthony Volpe in the bottom of the sixth was called back due to fan interference.

The call on the field was a home run, but a replay review showed that fans in the left-field stands had made contact with the ball over the field of play.

The umpires ruled that one run would have scored on the play, with George Lombard Jr. on first base at the time, cutting the Yankees' deficit to 4-3. Volpe was awarded second base.

But the next batter, Spencer Jones, struck out to end the inning.
