The Detroit Lions beat the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field in Week 7 action, 20-17 behind a clutch Jake Bates field goal kick. The Bates kick came after a decision by Lions coach Dan Campbell to go for it on fourth down which blew up in his face.
The Lions got the ball back on a missed field goal from Packers kicker Trey Smack, and drove down for the game-winner. Campbell explained his thought process for going for it deep in his own territory, a window into his no-holds-barred approach to calling plays.
“I thought we would get it,” Campbell said.
“I knew we would get the ball back if it didn't work out,” the Lions coach added.
Campbell's Lions are now 4-2 on the season and the Drew Petzing offensive coordinator experiment appears to be working out. The Lions didn't cash in many of their biggest opportunities on offense, but they moved the ball consistently and kept Jordan Love's Packers offense off the field in a huge division win in front of the hometown crowd at Ford Field.
Article Continues BelowPetzing, to his credit, has been attempting to pick up the slack of a Kelvin Sheppard-led defense that has been torched all season. The Lions' defense showed up in a big way against the Packers, with Brian Branch snagging a huge interception on a Love deep ball after his long-awaited return from injury.
Fellow safety Kerby Joseph's return date is still a mystery, but fans, and opposing coaches, know what they're going to get from Campbell and his team, and it typically includes fourth down gambles, and gritty play, most other fanbases don't expect.
