The Detroit Lions were in desperate need of a victory when they hosted the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8, and thanks to a second-half surge with their running game, they were able to secure a 19-15 triumph over the NFC North leaders.
However, there was no celebrating after the team had secured the victory. A brutal injury suffered by linebacker Jack Campbell was dominating the Lions locker room. Campbell, considered the leader of the Lions defense, suffered what appeared to be a traumatic injury while making a tackle of Minnesota tight end T.J. Hockenson in the fourth quarter.
Jack Campbell was secured on a backboard and carried off the field via a medical cart. He was then transported to the hospital. Head coach Dan Campbell's initial remarks when meeting with the media indicated that he had no new information on the linebacker's condition.
“Let me start with this,” the head coach said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Jack and his family. We don't have any information. We will keep you updated as this goes. But we are thinking about him.”
The Lions were able to steady themselves and secure the win after the Jack Campbell injury. The Lions used a dominant running game to take advantage of a Vikings defense that has been among the best in the NFL through the team's first six games.
Minnesota had taken a 15-12 lead midway through the fourth quarter on a TD pass from Kyler Murray to Hockenson, but the Lions responded with a 7-play, 69-yard drive that culminated with a Jared Goff TD pass to Jameson Williams. Detroit secured the win with a strong ground attack led by Jahmyr Gibbs (153 yards) and Sione Vaki (65 yards).
