The injury bug has hit the Toronto Maple Leafs hard in 2026-27, with John Tavares, Max Domi, Dakota Joshua and Chris Tanev all on the shelf.

That list got even longer on Monday night, as star winger Kirill Marchenko exited a 5-2 loss to the Calgary Flames early in the second period due to a lower-body injury, the team announced.

Leafs head coach Jim Hiller didn't ease any concerns after the contest.

“I don’t have the full update, but couldn’t come back and finish the game, so that’s never a good sign,” the bench boss told reporters, including TSN's Mark Masters.

Marchenko was involved in an awkward collision with Calgary forward Yegor Sharangovich while entering the offensive zone. He was knocked to the ice and appeared to have his left leg caught underneath him before falling into the boards.

The 26-year-old took one more shift in the second period, but it was a brief 14 seconds. He headed to Toronto's dressing room shortly afterwards and was ruled out for the remainder of the game before the third period started.

The Barnaul, Russia native finished with one shot on goal in 7:55 of ice time. He's been one of the Leafs' best players so far, now up to six goals and 14 points in his first 14 games in Ontario, good for third in team scoring behind only Auston Matthews and William Nylander.

He was on a four-game point streak entering Monday's contest.

Marchenko was acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets on the eve of the 2026-27 season as part of a seven-piece trade. He signed a six-year, $75 million extension with Toronto following the swap, with the new contract taking effect next season.

If Marchenko is forced to miss any time, first-overall pick Gavin McKenna would likely be the top candidate to be promoted back into the top six. The rookie is up to eight points in his first 14 NHL games.

The Leafs will be holding their collective breath, hoping that Marchenko's ailment is a short-term one.

Toronto returns to action against the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday night as a four-game West Coast road trip continues.
