Jalen Brunson spent his SNL hosting debut doing plenty of things that had nothing to do with basketball, but the sketch destined to follow him around was a High School Musical send-up in which the Knicks captain could not get picked for a pickup game.

The premise flipped everything about his real life. Brunson played a nerdy kid who shows up at the high school gym hoping to join the basketball team, and nobody wants him. The lone exception is a classmate played by Jeremy Culhane, who loves singing and dancing as much as he loves hoops.

From there, the sketch went full Troy Bolton. Culhane's character decides to abandon basketball entirely and audition for the school musical instead, a choice made easier by his crush on a classmate played by Veronika Slowikowska. Brunson then revealed a decent singing voice and used a love song to steal the girl away.

The sight of the reigning Finals MVP getting passed over for a gym-class squad, then winning a musical-theater love triangle, is exactly the kind of image that tends to outlive the episode itself.

It was not the only moment that landed. Brunson opened the night by taking questions from Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart, all seated in the audience, before bringing them onstage. He also set expectations early, joking that he would approach hosting the way he approaches a Knicks playoff game, with three awful quarters followed by a great finish.

The appearance capped a summer that has kept Brunson everywhere but the court. He led New York past the Spurs in June for the franchise's first title since 1973, was named both Eastern Conference Finals MVP and Finals MVP, and swept his ESPY categories in July.

He is the fifth basketball figure to host the show, joining Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and LeBron James, and the first since James in 2007. KATSEYE served as musical guest, also making their SNL debut.

The Knicks open their title defense against the 76ers on October 20.
