Dalton Knecht is getting an early opportunity to establish himself in the NBA after the Los Angeles Lakers waived him before the start of the season. The New York Knicks signed the former first-round pick to a two-way contract, and his first appearance gave coach Mike Brown plenty to like.
Knecht scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in 16 minutes during Wednesday's 135-105 win over the Chicago Bulls. After watching him contribute off the bench, Brown made it clear that he sees more to his game than perimeter shooting.
“He’s a scorer, not just a shooter. A lot of people think he’s a shooter because he’s white,” Brown said. “I said it for you. I hope I don’t get in trouble, but he can go and get it.”

Brown also explained what makes Knecht a more complete offensive option. He pointed to his ability to shoot from long range, score in the midrange, attack the basket, and pass.
That versatility could help Knecht find a role in New York's offense. Players who can create opportunities beyond spot-up shooting give coaches more ways to attack opposing defenses.
However, Brown also identified an area where Knecht needs to improve.
Article Continues Below“He’s got to work defensively,” the coach said while praising the way the forward approached his debut and contributed within his role.
Knecht averaged 7.1 points and 2.2 rebounds in 132 games with the Lakers. His shooting and defense had limited his opportunities in Los Angeles, eventually leading to his release.
The Knicks are now giving him another chance. His offensive skills have caught Brown's attention, but improving defensively will be important if he wants to earn consistent minutes in New York.
