The Sacramento Kings have endured a disastrous start to the 2026-27 NBA season, dropping their first five games by an average margin of 16.6 points. However, head coach Doug Christie is reportedly not on the hot seat despite the team's continued struggles.
According to The Athletic's Sam Amick, Sacramento's front office believes Christie deserves a fair opportunity to prove himself with a healthier roster before evaluating his future with the organization.
Amick reported that the Kings are prioritizing the development of Christie and their younger players rather than making an immediate coaching change. However, continued losses could eventually force the organization to reconsider its position.
Sacramento's struggles reached another low Thursday night following a 132-120 loss to the previously winless New Orleans Pelicans. The defeat dropped the Kings to 0-5, with three of their losses coming by double digits.
The Kings have also suffered blowout losses to the Los Angeles Clippers and San Antonio Spurs by 25 and 27 points, respectively.
Kings' injury concerns complicate Doug Christie's future
Sacramento has navigated significant injuries throughout the opening weeks of the season, with Ben Simmons, Keegan Murray, Maxime Raynaud and Dylan Cardwell all sidelined.
Simmons will miss the entire 2026-27 season after suffering a torn right Achilles tendon, while Murray is dealing with left ankle capsulitis. Raynaud remains sidelined with a right patellar subluxation, and Cardwell is recovering from a left calf strain.
Murray is expected to be reevaluated within 10 to 14 days, while Raynaud continues his rehabilitation and Cardwell is expected to undergo another evaluation.
Article Continues BelowDespite the injuries, Sacramento has received encouraging production from rookie guard Darius Acuff Jr., who recorded 34 points, 14 assists and six rebounds against New Orleans.
Acuff is averaging 24.0 points and 6.6 assists through five games, providing one of the few bright spots amid Sacramento's winless start.
Christie remains in the final guaranteed season of his contract, which includes a team option for the following campaign. His immediate future appears secure, but Sacramento's continued struggles could increase pressure on the organization to make changes.
The Kings will look for their first victory Saturday when they visit the undefeated Memphis Grizzlies (5-0) at 5 p.m. PT.
