Kenneth Walker: Means a lot that the Chiefs trust me

Kenneth Walker played his first game with the Chiefs on Monday night and head coach Andy Reid made it clear right off the bat that the free agent addition is going to be playing a major role in the offense.

After rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane intercepted Broncos quarterback Bo Nix to end Denver’s first possession, Reid called four straight runs with Walker. The fourth of them was a fourth down conversion and Walker would get three more carries on the opening drive before Patrick Mahomes ended it with a touchdown run.

That set the Chiefs on their way to a 31-10 win and Walker would end the night with 26 total touches.

“It means a lot,” Walker said. “It means they trust me. It’s good to feel that way.”

Walker’s touches resulted in 191 yards and two touchdowns, including a 60-yard lightning bolt on another fourth down early in the third quarter. Reid called that run “a thing of beauty” on a memorable night for the new Chief.

“You never know, going in, how many times you’re going to give him the ball,” Reid said. “That’s not a calculated thing, you gotta be making yards. For him to play the way he did, I thought it was spectacular. It was something you hope for, and you got to see it, where he was the main guy. Did a great job with it.”

Walker’s final game with the Seahawks was Super Bowl LX and he was named the MVP of that victory. His first game with the Chiefs carried a little less weight, but he left just as strong an impression on those who were watching him in action.
