Kenneth Walker is Patrick Mahomes' best weapon since Tyreek Hill played for the Chiefs

Kenneth Walker left a Super Bowl winner to join the remnants of an NFL dynasty.

On the night that Patrick Mahomes returned, a former second-round draft pick who initially started at Wake Forest stole the Monday Night Football spotlight and gave Andy Reid his most powerful offensive weapon since Tyreek Hill wore No. 10 for the Chiefs.

"He did a really nice job,” said Reid, after Walker recorded 191 total offensive yards and two touchdowns in Kansas City's 31-10 blowout of the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium.

“You never know going in how many times you're going to give him the ball. That's not a calculated thing. You have to be making yards. For him to play the way he did, I thought was spectacular.”

"We know it’s a touchdown waiting to happen on every carry," a history-making Travis Kelce added.

Walker was known as 'Thunder Shoes' in high school but the Memphis, Tennessee native almost never played college ball.

He awoke in 2018 with difficulty breathing.

An emergency room visit revealed that Walker had blood cots in both of his lungs.

"When a doctor told me I couldn't play no more, I just thought football was over," Walker said.

"It was a shocking moment. But my dad worked with me throughout that whole process and he was in the hospital with me, as well, and my mom. Going through that, it just made me grateful for each and every day to be able to go out there and strap up and play this game and just still be alive."

Last February, the 5-foot-9 and 211-pound running back was the most dominant player on the field during Super Bowl LX, outshining Sam Darnold, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Drake Maye during the Seattle Seahawks' 29-13 thumping of the New England Patriots in Santa Clara, Califorina.

The Seahawks answered that world championship by letting Walker walk, then the Chiefs stunned the NFL on March 10 by handing a three-year, $43 million contract to an athlete whose playing career almost stopped in high school.

Six months later, Mahomes turned a 274-day recovery period into a bold 2026 prediction, while Walker reignited a Kansas City offense that had become one-dimensional in recent years.

Tyreek Hill spent 2016-21 stretching the field and torching opposing defenses when he wore Chiefs red.

If Hill eventually enters the Pro Football Hall of Fame, it will primarily be because he totaled 8,742 yards and 67 TDs while bouncing from a wide receiver and rusher to a kickoff and punt returner for Reid.

While Denver QB Bo Nix looked vulnerable in his return from injury on Monday, Mahomes started the Chiefs' scoring with an electric 15-yard rushing TD and Kansas City recorded almost 400 yards of total offense.

“They were in the AFC Championship game for a reason,” Mahomes said. “For us to go out and win like that, that's the first step. It shows all the work in training camp paid off. But how can we be better?”

Walker drove it all vs the Broncos, averaging 7.5 yards per carry and breaking off a 60-yard TD burst early in the third quarter.

Kansas City held the time of possession edge by more than 7 minutes, while 11 of the Chiefs' 19 first downs were via rushes.

The run-first attack opened up the field and took pocket pressure off Mahomes, who completed 15-of-27 passes for 184 yards, two TDs and an 86 rating.

Skeptics scoffed when the Chiefs promised Walker more than $40m as Mahomes was still rehabbing from two major knee injuries.

One game into a new NFL season, Mahomes looked playoff-ready and the Chiefs' offense was dynamic again -- because the reigning Super Bowl MVP was in the middle of Big Red's wide-open playbook.

“They've accepted me with open arms, and I appreciate them for that," Walker said.
