Joe Burrow was left chewing on his late-game error after the Cincinnati Bengals bowed to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 30-27, at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday.
Burrow steered the Bengals to scoring territory in the final minute. He, however, lost the ball after running into Derrick Harmon. Sebastian Joseph-Day recovered the ball, sealing the nail-biting win for the Steelers. Cincinnati hoped to have its first 3-0 start since 2015.
The Bengals took a three-point lead, 27-24, after Burrow connected with Mike Gesicki for a 25-yard touchdown and Evan McPherson converted the extra point. Still, they failed to close out Pittsburgh.
NFL reporter Scott Kacsmar pointed out a surprising statistic about the 29-year-old Burrow.
“Joe Burrow is now 1-34 when trailing in the last 8:00 in the NFL,” wrote Kacsmar.
His wild tidbit went viral, earning 2.5 million views as of this writing.
“The Bengals defense has cost him more games than any QB should ever have to carry, but nobody wants that conversation,” said @bbyxolau.
“Can't be a real stat,” added @millerfamily12.
“That's a crazy stat. I'm completely shocked by that. I'm glad my (Chicago) BEARS finally have a real QB who has the clutch gene,” wrote @BK38LBC.
“Not necessarily false. But definitely a very stupid and intellectually dishonest statistic. It counts every single Burrow loss. By the same logic, Burrow is 48-0 when leading starting the last 8:00 of the game,” commented @ahcyrus.
“1-34 trailing late is actually cursed,” stated @TheCoorsGuy26.
Burrow took full accountability for his costly mistake.
“Trying to take a shot at the end zone, trying not to take the sack, trying to get the ball out, (and I) fumbled it,” said the three-time Pro Bowler in a report from the Associated Press' Will Graves.
The Bengals will visit the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4.
