Troy Aikman was in Philadelphia to call Monday night’s game between the Cowboys and the Eagles and he took some time before it got underway to catch up with his first boss in the NFL.
Aikman’s conversation with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones before the Dallas win comes at a moment of professional uncertainty for Aikman. His contract with ESPN will be up at the end of the season and he recently said he would “have a hard time not taking a good look” at a chance to work for the organization that drafted him with the first overall pick in 1989.
Aikman has worked as a consultant for the Dolphins and Jones was asked on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday if he’s open to the idea of Aikman taking on a significant role in the organization. Jones said he “could and would” be open to that notion and called Aikman “certainly qualified” to take on that kind of job.
“He’s one of the hardest working, most focused people that I’ve ever been around,” Jones said. “When you’re around each other, a part of that makeup can make it where you have your ups and downs. I think the world of him. I’ve seen his image and had it in my eyes since I walked in the NFL. He’s outstanding. The answer is not necessarily that we’re going to do something more direct with the team at this time, but don’t rule it out. It is very possible.”
Very possible and definitely happening are far from the same thing, but smoke signals about a possible partnership could prove to be foreshadowing for what will take place when and if it becomes definite that Aikman is going to be looking for a new job come the end of the 2026 season.
