Washington Commanders safety Tyler Owens left former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt in awe after delivering one of the most physically dominant special teams sequences of Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Owens destroyed three Philadelphia blockers on a single punt coverage rep before dropping returner Britain Covey cold.

Watt shared his feelings about Owens’ incredible strength and play on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday.

“Not just special teams. This is legitimately one of the greatest football plays I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t get much better than that right there. Every coach in America will be showing this rep to their team this week,” Watt tweeted.

Lining up on punt coverage at Lincoln Financial Field, Owens raced downfield toward Philadelphia’s return blockers. Instead of trying to avoid the blockers or getting forced toward the sideline, the 6-foot-2, 213-pound safety took them on directly.

Owens ran into a double-team at full speed and quickly got past the first blocker before powering through a second Philadelphia defender. When a third Eagles player tried to take him down, Owens stayed on his feet, broke free, and kept moving upfield.

Owens took out three blockers within a five-yard span. Eagles returner Britain Covey caught the punt but had nowhere to go. As he tried to get through the fallen blockers, Owens closed in, wrapped him up, and slammed him into the turf.

The entire play lasted only a few seconds, but Owens fought through three blockers without losing speed or balance. His effort on special teams helped the Commanders shut down Philadelphia’s return and is being hailed as one of the best individual plays of Week 1.
