Illinois has parted ways with defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck after just four games, head coach Bret Bielema announced on Sunday. The move comes less than 24 hours after a 42-19 road defeat to Ohio State laid bare the Fighting Illini's defensive shortcomings.

The Buckeyes racked up 518 yards while averaging 7.6 yards per play. Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith led the way with 12 receptions for 217 yards and four touchdowns, while quarterback Julian Sayin completed 27 of 36 passes for 367 yards.

Through four games, Illinois ranks 111th nationally in total defense, surrendering 391 yards per game. The Illini are also allowing 26.5 points per contest, while opponents have averaged 5.7 yards per play. Within the Big Ten, Illinois ranks third-worst in total defense and last in passing defense at 255 passing yards allowed per game.

The Fighting Illini has also struggled on pivotal downs and in the red zone. Opponents have converted 41.8% of third-down attempts and 66.7% of fourth-down opportunities. Every opponent trip to the red zone has ended in points, including 11 touchdowns and four field goals. Those figures rank 107th, 100th and tied for 128th nationally, respectively.

Hauck became Illinois' defensive coordinator in February after Aaron Henry left for Notre Dame. Hauck had previously spent eight seasons as Montana's head coach during his second run with the program. Across two stints with the Grizzlies, he compiled a 151-43 record, led Montana to seven conference titles and reached three national title games.

The Illini are now 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten play. Illinois will return to Champaign-Urbana this week to face Purdue.
