The Carolina Hurricanes aren't suffering from any kind of Stanley Cup hangover, opening their 2026-27 season with a 6-1-1 record while outscoring their opposition 31-19 in that span.
They're in first place in the Eastern Conference in the early going, a spot they figure to battle for all campaign long.
Things will get more difficult, at least in the short term, as forward Taylor Hall is week-to-week with an upper-body injury sustained in Tuesday night's 4-2 victory over the Washington Capitals, head coach Rod Brind'Amour confirmed.
The 34-year-old left the contest in the second period. He has five points in eight games this season after playing a starring role in the 2026 postseason, amassing 19 points in 19 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
“We've got kind of a week-to-week situation happening,” Brind'Amour said Friday, per NHL.com. “So ask me again in a week.”
It's a disappointing setback for Carolina, with Hall, Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake forming one of the NHL's premier second lines.
Hall now joins captain Jordan Staal on the shelf. The veteran center is expected to miss 1-2 months with a calf tear, leaving the Hurricanes with another significant hole in their forward group.
In more encouraging news, Seth Jarvis is approaching his season debut after undergoing surgery in June to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder.
Brind'Amour hopes Jarvis will return during the team's five-game road trip, which begins against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday afternoon. However, the forward had not yet been medically cleared as of Friday.

“But with the extra skates, we've done a lot of battle drills, which is nice for me. Just testing it out a little more. Everything feels good. Hopefully I'm playing soon. It's kind of what I'm holding out for.”
Jarvis led the Canes with 32 goals last regular season, topping the 30-goal mark for the third consecutive year. He added four goals and 11 points in 19 postseason contests to help Carolina win its first championship since 2006.
Now riding a six-game winning streak, the Hurricanes will look to keep the wagon rolling in Manitoba on Saturday, with puck drop against the Jets scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET.
