Indianapolis Colts vs Kansas City Chiefs Game Preview:

The Colts are coming off a 41-23 home loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1.

In his first game since tearing his Achilles last season in Week 14, QB Daniel Jones completed 61.3% of his passes for 166 passing yards, one touchdown, and an interception.

Indianapolis scored a touchdown on the opening drive of the game, but Baltimore answered back with 28 straight points to take a 28-6 lead in the second quarter.

The Colts, who have not won a game since Week 10 of last season, were outgained 506 - 251 in total yards by the Ravens.

“Obviously, was not good enough from start to finish. We’ve got to coach better. We’ve got to play better in order to get better,” Colts head coach Shane Steichen said. “We’ve got a long season ahead of us. We’ve got to clean up the mistakes. We had a lot of them, and then we go from there.”

“Definitely an eye-opener, definitely a wakeup call,” said RB Jonathan Taylor. “Like, hey, season’s here. Obviously we know no one’s gonna give us anything, but it’s a good team over there and it’s like, hey, doesn’t matter what you guys did last year, you gotta prove it again this year.”

Expectations are clear in Indianapolis as the Colts, who have not made the playoffs since 2020, look to end the team’s longest drought since 1988-1994 when they went seven straight seasons without a postseason appearance.

In his first game back since tearing his ACL and LCL — exactly nine months to the date — Patrick Mahomes showed that he’s still him, leading the Chiefs to a 31-10 season-opening win over the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

The two-time league MVP completed 15-of-27 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, he ran seven times for 23 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown.

“Going for the end zone, it kind of gave me that confidence that I can go out there and be myself,” said Mahomes after the game. “I just wanted to play. I had done so much rehab and so much work to put myself in this position. I just wanted to get out there and play. This is what you do it for.

RB Kenneth Walker III ran for 173 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries and caught three passes for 18 yards and a touchdown in his Chiefs’ debut.

Walker, who was named Super Bowl MVP with the Seahawks last season, signed a 3-year, $43.05 million contract with Kansas City in free agency.
