David Corenswet put his acting skills to the test in his latest role that went against his NFL fandom.

Corenswet will be playing New York Giants icon John Tuggle in the upcoming film, “Mr. Irrelevant,” and as a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan, it was easier than he thought.

He explained that he didn't know if he could pull off the role at first.

“When I learned that John Tuggle scored his only professional touchdown against Philadelphia, in Philadelphia, I thought this would be a terrible portrayal,” Corenswet said before asking himself, “What will Bradley Cooper think of me?”

“But when I saw the footage of that play, when I saw John dive into that Kelly Green endzone, the fans cheered. The same fans that booed Santa Claus, cheered for a New York Giants scoring six on their turf.”

That moment was a key piece for Corenswat to tap into the life of Tuggle.

“Because for that moment John Tuggle wasn't a New York Giant he was Mr. Irrelevant,” Corenswet continued. “He was the guy that was never supposed to make it.”

Corenswet is confident that fans will enjoy the film regardless of where their NFL loyalty lies.

“You don't have to be a Giants fan or even a football fan to root for this guy giving everything he's got for his team, his coaches, for his family, and for the girl he loves,” he said.

Corenswet concluded: “I had the honor of feeling the great impact John Tuggle had on this world by getting to play him.”

The film will follow the Giants icon who was the final pick in the 1983 NFL draft by the New York team, who earned the satirical moniker “Mr. Irrelevant,” which has been used years after Tuggle's NFL career. The film will let fans in on his inspiring story of being an underdog, his relationship with head coach Parcells, and his courageous battle with cancer.

Alongside Corenswet, Isabel May, David Krumholtz, and Michael Shannon are billed for the film.

“Mr. Irrelevant” will be released in theaters on Christmas Day. Take a look at the trailer below:
