The Kansas City Chiefs enter Week 1 against the Denver Broncos with Patrick Mahomes back under center after months of recovery from a knee injury. Mahomes' injury could have changed Kansas CityâÂÂs season before it started, but the quarterback had one answer from the beginning. According to The AthleticâÂÂs Jesse Newell, Mahomes told Andy Reid exactly when he planned to return.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid remembered the moment after Mahomes underwent an MRI on Dec. 14.
âÂÂHe goes, âÂÂIâÂÂm coming back (for Week 1),âÂÂâ Reid said, recalling Mahomesâ words. âÂÂThere was no hesitation.âÂÂ
From there, that confidence quickly turned into action. Surgeon Dan Cooper advised the Chiefs star to undergo surgery as soon as possible. General manager Brett Veach said Mahomes never hesitated.
âÂÂIt wasnâÂÂt like, âÂÂWell, let me think about it,âÂÂâ Veach said. âÂÂHe tore his knee, and he was on a plane the next day.âÂÂ
Then, wide receiver Tyquan Thornton saw the same urgency after surgery.
âÂÂThat guy, man,â Thornton said with a smile, âÂÂhe just loves to compete.âÂÂ
Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes turned recovery into a full-time mission
Mahomes watched the Chiefs lose their final three games without him last season. That helpless feeling stayed with him.

Meanwhile, Reid saw that commitment up close while rehabbing his own knee at the facility.
âÂÂThere were no days off. He kept stacking the days,â Reid said. âÂÂSome days you donâÂÂt want to go in there. YouâÂÂre not feeling it. But he kept showing up.âÂÂ
Veach also saw how much the Chiefs QB gave up for the comeback.
âÂÂHe gave up an entire summer,â Veach said.
Still, the work was only part of the story. Mahomes finished 2025 with 3,587 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 14 games. Now the real test arrives under the Arrowhead lights. The Chiefs host the Broncos in Week 1, and Patrick Mahomes finally gets the injury return he called months ago. Was there ever any doubt?
