An HBCU basketball player nursing an ACL injury has been detained by ICE since August, according to a report by the Courier-Journal. Kentucky State student-athlete Aminata Seck was taken into ICE custody at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on August 7.

She was taken into custody during the Kentucky State University women's basketball team's trip to New York to participate in a tournament. Attorney Sadiqa Reynolds told the Courier Journal that, ever since her detention, she has been moved to multiple facilities and is still dealing with her ACL injury. The report details that she has not been able to get consistent medical attention while she's been in custody.

Reynolds raised awareness about Seck's detainment in a social media post last week.

“Amina is a graduate student at @kystate1886 who came here on a student visa to play basketball. I believe she missed a deadline because she was having back surgery. She is now in custody with a torn Achilles. She needs surgery. She needs medical attention. She was arrested at the airport while traveling with the team. Kentucky State has done what they can and now we must step up. Thank you Coach @coachamaniw__ for all you have done. God bless. Keep praying. Keep fighting.”

Seck is a 6'4″ center from Dakar, Senegal. She's played at Kentucky State University over the past two seasons and transferred to the institution from Langston University. In the 2025-2026 season, she emerged as one of the Lady Thoroughbreds' most important players, averaging 11.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and starting in 17 of the team's 20 games.
