Gavin Williams delivered one of the best performances of his postseason career when the Cleveland Guardians needed him most.
The right-hander struck out 12 batters in Game 5 against the Chicago White Sox. His performance helped Cleveland secure a 2-0 win and complete its comeback in the American League Division Series.
Williams said his focus was on helping the team win while easing the pressure on the bullpen after four demanding games.
“I'm just trying to do my job and give the team the best shot to win,” Williams said after the game. “And I was honestly trying to save the pen a little bit. I know they've gone through it a little bit in the first four games, I guess. So that's the main thing: just giving the team the best shot to win.”
Williams took the mound just two days after recording the final out in Game 4. With the Guardians facing elimination after losing the first two games, he gave them 5 2/3 scoreless innings and allowed only one hit.
