It was appropriate that the Titans and Giants played Sunday’s game at the Meadowlands in persistent rain. It was a dreary day in every way.
The Giants left happy, though, with an ugly win.
The Giants held off the Titans 12-7 to move to 2-1. The Titans fell to 0-3.
Tennessee scored the game’s only touchdown on a 4-yard pass from Cam Ward to Wan’Dale Robinson that cut the Giants’ lead to 12-7 with 5:35 left. The Titans had an opportunity to win it on their final drive.
They reached the Giants 7 with 24 seconds left, but on first down, Ward threw an interception to Jevon Holland in the end zone. Ward was trying to Elic Ayomanor in the back of the end zone.
Holland should be mentioned in any Defensive Player of the Year conversation, with three interceptions in three games, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
The Titans outgained the Giants 262 to 238 yards. Tennessee had five consecutive three-and-outs in the first half and only 54 yards at halftime.
The Giants crossed midfield six times but went 0-for 2 in the red zone. Giants kicker Dominic Zvada made field goals of 39, 27, 39 and 30 yards.
Jameis Winston went 14-of-22 for 118 yards. Cam Skattebo had 20 carries for 60 yards and three catches for 40 yards. Najee Harris rushed for 52 yards on nine carries.
Ward was 23-of-36 for 181 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Tony Pollard had 17 carries for 74 yards, and Carnell Tate caught six passes for 58 yards.
