Dennard Wilson has not been shy about calling out the New York Giants’ defense this season, and the defensive coordinator is not changing his approach as the team prepares to face the Philadelphia Eagles.

Asked whether there is a danger in being so blunt publicly, Wilson did not flinch.

“I think we get too caught up into not speaking the truth, right? The film doesn’t lie, and it never lies. And it’s always evidence. It’s a solid tape. And what I said in front of this podium, they’ve heard me say it from the first day they were here. So it’s nothing that they haven’t heard before,” Wilson said, via SNY.

“It’s not calling out a specific player. It’s calling out a behavior. It’s calling out what we’re not doing collectively, because at the end of the day, it’s me as well. So if I let it slip, shame on me,” he continued. “You know, I think too many coaches these days are scared to have those hard conversations.”

Wilson added that a strong bond with his players is what allows him to be so direct.

“If you build a relationship and you have this bond and you have this tight-knit group, you can speak to them in a certain way and identify certain things without attacking them personally. It’s not a personal attack. It’s a behavioral attack,” Wilson said. “And that’s how I go about it, and that’s how I’ve been trained to do this since I was a young coach 20-some years ago.”

Wilson made headlines last month after a Week 6 loss to the New Orleans Saints, when the Giants missed 18 tackles. He did not hold back, labeling players who do not run to the ball as “traitors to the defense” and warning that “if you don’t change the behaviors, we have to change the players.”

New York bounced back with a 27-21 road win over the Houston Texans in Week 7, and the Giants enter Sunday’s matchup at 4-2-1 coming off their bye.

Wilson joined John Harbaugh’s staff in January after two seasons as the Tennessee Titans’ defensive coordinator, reuniting with the coach he worked under in Baltimore.

The Giants will now look to keep it rolling against an Eagles team that has dropped six straight games.
