The San Francisco Giants have brought right-handed reliever Camilo Doval back, claiming him off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. The 29-year-old was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh earlier this week.

San Francisco made room for Doval on its 40-man roster by transferring right-hander Blade Tidwell to the 60-day injured list. Tidwell has a high-grade right elbow sprain and was recommended for surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament. The procedure is expected to keep him out for the remainder of 2026 and could sideline him for the entire 2027 season.

Doval originally joined the Giants in 2021 and spent his first five MLB seasons with the organization. His best run came from 2021 through 2023, when he compiled a 2.77 ERA across 162 1/3 innings, along with a 30.2% strikeout rate, 9.6% walk rate and 53.4% ground-ball rate. He became San Francisco's closer and recorded 27 saves in 2022 before leading the National League with 39 saves and earning an All-Star selection in 2023.

The Giants traded Doval to the New York Yankees at the 2025 deadline in a deal that brought Jesus Rodriguez, Parks Harber, Trystan Vrieling and Carlos De La Rosa to San Francisco. Doval took a step back after leaving the Giants, posting a 4.82 ERA in 22 games for New York following the trade. He returned to the Yankees for 2026 on a one-year, $6.1 million contract and logged a 4.54 ERA over 44 appearances and 39.2 innings, with 39 strikeouts.

New York then dealt Doval to the Pirates on Aug. 1. He appeared in 20 games for Pittsburgh, producing a 3.79 ERA and 23 strikeouts over 19 innings while issuing 14 walks. The Pirates subsequently designated him for assignment.

Doval's control has been a major issue in recent seasons. Since the start of 2024, he has a 4.23 ERA and 13% walk rate, although his 26% strikeout rate and 55.3% ground-ball rate remain solid.

San Francisco's bullpen owns a collective 4.18 ERA this season, ranking 19th in MLB. Doval remains under club control for 2027 through arbitration, giving the Giants the choice to tender him a contract or move on during the offseason.

San Francisco is 65-94 and has three regular-season games remaining against the Los Angeles Dodgers. If Doval appears in that series, he would become the 71st player to play for the Giants in 2026, tying the MLB record set by the 2025 Atlanta Braves.
