With the Miami Heat off to a 2-5 start after the 138-117 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night, there's no doubt that the outlook on the team in the first season led by Giannis Antetokounmpo is a major talking point. As the Heat work through their early-season struggles, Antetokounmpo would give his thoughts on the team and their contender status for this season.

If one thing is for certain about Miami, the team is still figuring out how the pieces fit with one another, as it starts with its main duo in Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

Antetokounmpo recorded 30 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists on Monday, while Adebayo logged 16 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, but while the offense wasn't the issue in the loss, the defense has been disappointing.

Led by Luka Doncic and his 42 points, the Lakers shot 57 percent from the field and made 19 three-pointers out of 43 attempts. After the contest, Antetokounmpo would be asked if he expected Miami to compete right away, with the two-time MVP answering honestly.

“I don’t know. I'm just a basketball player. Just came here to compete,” Antetokounmpo said, via Heat Central. “Do I think we have the pieces? Yeah. Do I think we have a lot of things to figure out? We have a lot. But I know what the Miami Heat culture is about and the players in this locker room are about.”

Giannis was asked if he came to Miami expecting to contend right away, or if he knew it would be a process to get the right roster around him:

Heat's Bam Adebayo speaks on underwhelming defensive effort

As mentioned, while there could've been some grace for the Heat to figure it out on offense, the one aspect of the team that many weren't worried about was its defense. Ranking 26th in the NBA in defensive rating (119.8), Adebayo would say that's the key to making this team “great.”

“When we get tired of touching that hot stove enough, we’re going to figure it out,” Adebayo said. “We’ve got to turn the incredible individual defenders into a team defense. Once we figure that out, that’s when this team can really be great.”
