Florida State basketball secured a huge offseason coup in July 2025 by landing Marcis Ponder. Now the four-star College Basketball Recruiting win for FSU delivered his collegiate debut at center. But this game came with Charles Barkley entering the picture.
Ponder revealed what type of exchange he had with the NBA legend while chatting with CBB insider Andy Katz. The seven-foot big pulled back the curtain on what the renown analyst and basketball icon told him.
“It's always great to meet an NBA legend. But he said to me that he loves the way I get up and down the court,” Ponder began during his appearance on Katz' “The Sideline” podcast. “He also loves the way I fight for rebounds.”
However, Barkley handed Ponder some critique too.
“He said I need to work on my conditioning,” Ponder added. “And that's something we're already working on and getting better at.”
Still, Ponder received some great advice and had a once-in-the-lifetime conversation with a legend in his sport. Turns out Ponder shares a connection with another Inside the NBA personality.

Ponder becomes the biggest recruiting win for head coach Luke Loucks, who played for the Seminoles before taking over as head coach last season. FSU went 18-15 overall in Loucks' first season in taking over for school legend Leonard Hamilton, who he played for as a player in Tallahassee.
Ponder's not the only massive addition to FSU, though. The Seminoles brought over UNC Asheville transfer and past Big South star Kameron Taylor via the portal.
